This Privacy Policy explains how HYP collects, uses, discloses, and protects your personal information when you use the HYP mobile application and related services. We handle your information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
HYP only collects your personal and location data when you permit it through your in-app settings and device permissions. We use it for a single purpose: to give you helpful, location-based social recommendations. You can turn data collection off at any time, and any data we use in aggregate is completely anonymised so it can no longer identify you.
01 Who we are
HYP ("HYP", "we", "us", or "our") provides a social assistant mobile application that helps you discover places, see what's happening around you, coordinate with friends, and plan activities in your city. In this policy, "personal information" has the meaning given in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) — information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
We are the entity responsible for the personal information collected through the HYP app. If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your information, you can reach us using the details in the Contact & complaints section.
02 Information we collect
We aim to collect only the information we need to provide the service. The information we collect depends on how you use HYP and the permissions you grant.
Information you give us
- Account details — such as your name or display name, email address or phone number, and password or authentication credentials when you sign up.
- Profile information — optional details you choose to add, such as a photo, bio, preferences, and your interests or taste.
- Your connections — friends you add and groups you join, so we can power HYP's social features.
- Content and messages — the chats, requests, and plans you create when you ask HYP to help you, and feedback or support enquiries you send us.
Information we collect automatically
- Location data — your device's approximate or precise location, but only when you have enabled location sharing in your settings and granted the relevant device permission. See Location data & your permissions.
- Usage information — how you interact with the app, such as features used, places viewed, and recommendations you tap, so we can improve the experience.
- Device and technical information — device type, operating system, app version, language settings, and basic diagnostic or crash data.
Information from third parties
- Sign-in providers — if you sign in using a third-party service (for example Apple or Google), we receive basic profile information you authorise them to share.
- Venue and mapping partners — place details, opening hours, and how busy a venue is, which we combine with your request to generate recommendations.
03 Location data & your permissions
Location is central to what HYP does, so we treat it with particular care. We do not collect your location unless you have switched location sharing on in your in-app settings and granted location permission to the app through your device's operating system. Both controls are yours, and either one can be turned off at any time.
- Purpose-limited — we use your location solely to provide location-based recommendations and social features: showing you relevant places nearby, how busy they are, and which friends are around when you have chosen to share that.
- You control sharing — you decide whether to share your location at all, and with whom. Sharing your presence with friends is a separate, opt-in choice from allowing the app to generate recommendations for you.
- Off means off — when you disable location sharing in settings or revoke the permission on your device, HYP stops collecting your location. You can continue to use the parts of the app that don't rely on it.
- No silent tracking — we don't sell your location data, and we don't use it to build advertising profiles about you.
Your location is collected only while you've allowed it, used only to make HYP useful to you, and never shared or sold beyond that purpose.
04 How we use your information
We use your personal information for the following purposes:
- To provide, personalise, and improve the HYP service, including location-based recommendations tailored to your taste and context.
- To power social features — letting you see and coordinate with friends you've connected with and chosen to share with.
- To help you discover places and understand how busy they are in real time.
- To respond to your requests, provide customer support, and communicate with you about the service.
- To maintain the safety, security, and integrity of the app, and to detect and prevent fraud or misuse.
- To comply with our legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We will only use your personal information for the purpose we collected it, for a directly related purpose you would reasonably expect, or where you have consented — consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.
05 Aggregate & anonymised data
To understand demand, improve recommendations, and share insights with venue partners, we may analyse information in aggregate — for example, how busy an area or type of place tends to be at certain times.
Any data used in this way is completely anonymised. We remove or irreversibly de-identify information that could identify you, and we combine it with data from many other people so that no individual can be singled out. Aggregate insights describe patterns and places, never identifiable people. Anonymised, aggregated information is no longer personal information under the Privacy Act.
06 When we disclose information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share it in limited circumstances:
- Service providers — trusted providers who help us run HYP (such as cloud hosting, analytics, crash reporting, and mapping services), who are bound to protect your information and only use it on our instructions.
- Venue partners — only as anonymised, aggregated insights, as described above. We do not share your identity or individual location history with venues.
- Other users — information you choose to share through HYP's social features, such as your presence or plans, is shared only with the people you select. See Social features & other people.
- Legal and safety — where required or authorised by law, or where reasonably necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of you, us, or others.
- Business transfers — if HYP is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred subject to this policy.
07 Social features & other people
HYP is a social product, so some information is shared with people you connect with — but always under your control. When you add friends, join a group, or share your presence or a plan, the people you've chosen can see what you share. Sharing your location with friends is opt-in and can be limited or turned off at any time.
If other people add you or mention you, we use that information only to operate the social features and to let you respond. You can manage your connections and what you share from within the app.
08 Storage, security & overseas disclosure
We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. These include encryption in transit, access controls, and limiting access to information on a need-to-know basis.
Some of our service providers (for example cloud infrastructure) may store or process information on servers located outside Australia. Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so while we work hard to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
09 How long we keep your data
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it to provide the service and for the purposes set out in this policy, or as required by law. Location data used to generate recommendations is retained only as long as needed for that purpose. When information is no longer required, we take reasonable steps to delete it or de-identify it. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal information, except where we are required to retain it.
10 Your rights & choices
You have control over your information:
- Access and correction — you can request access to the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, or incomplete.
- Manage permissions — you can turn location sharing and other permissions on or off at any time through your in-app settings and your device settings.
- Control sharing — you can manage your connections and choose what you share with friends.
- Delete your account — you can delete your account, which removes or anonymises your personal information as described above.
- Withdraw consent — where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it, though some features may no longer work as a result.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request, and we will respond within a reasonable period.
11 Children
HYP is not directed at children, and the service is intended for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under this age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
12 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
